is taking on the challenge of recycling random waste singlehandedly. As
they collect so-called "junk" - cookie wrappers, soda bottles, corks,
yogurt containers and more - they create fun and interesting products.
TerraCycle is a company with an interesting history. The company first began in 2001 with two college students who saw the value in creating a company that followed eco-friendly, sustainable principles. Calling it eco-capitalism, they created their first product, TerraCycle plant food. The plant food is made from actual worm poop and then packaged in reused soda bottles.
Since that time, Terra Cycle has expanded their product line, creating many more products from a number or different recycled products. Actually, upcycling waste into fun and clever accessories, office supplies and garden supplies has become their specialty.
While their upcycled products are extremely creative and environmentally friendly, how they go about doing it is even more impressive. TerraCycle has created a number of programs, sponsored by larger corporations, that encourage the general public to recycle items that would otherwise go to the dump. In fact, by upcycling waste, TerraCycle is helping reduce the millions of wrappers, drink pouches and corks that end up in landfills every year.
Their newest programs encourage individuals to recycle wrappers and bags from granola, cookies, energy bars, etc. Those enrolled in the recycling programs collect their wrappers or other form of garbage, sending their garbage to the company free of charge and receiving a small payment for each recycled item. TerraCycle then works its magic, creating totes, lunch boxes, backpacks and more. My personal favorite is the "I used to be a plastic bag bag", which is made from more than 20 recycled plastic shopping bags fused together to make a fashion statement.
