Old wine barrels from the Kendall-Jackson winery in Sonoma County will be taking on an environmentally friendly second life - as rainwater containers and backyard composters.

Kendall-Jackson, which produces 3 million cases of wine each year, has agreed to sell its old oak barrels to a New Jersey firm called TerraCycle that specializes in making home products out of recycled materials. TerraCycle will retool the old barrels in Stockton and sell them nationally through retailers, including Home Depot and Sam's Club.

Some of the barrels will be given spigots and a downspout connector, creating a container to store rainwater that runs off of roofs. Other barrels will be turned on their sides, given handles, and mounted on wheels to become composters that can easily be turned by hand.

TerraCycle hopes to sell 10,000 of the repurposed barrels each year.
