Murder suspect sought

MURDER SUSPECT SOUGHT: Denver Police have issued a warrant for the arrest of Alexander Montoya, 21, in connection with a double shooting on King Street in July 2003 that left one person dead and one injured. Both victims were transported to Denver Health Medical Center where Edward Madrid, 41, was pronounced dead. Montoya is known to frequent the Montbello neighborhood and is considered armed and dangerous.


ED BOARD MEMBER INDICTED: A member of the Colorado State Board of Education was indicted by a Federal grand jury in Idaho on charges of conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Darlene Lopez, 36, was allegedly involved in marijuana trafficking three times this year, according to the indictment. She faces up to 40 years in jail if convicted of the conspiracy charge, and five years each for the possession charges, in addition to $2 million in fines. 


SPAMMER SENTENCED: A Louisville man has been sentenced to 21 months in prison and three years probation for sending spam e-mail messages as part of services offered by his promotional company. Eddie Davidson, 35, was also ordered to pay over $700,000 in restitution to the IRS and forfeit property he purchased, including gold coins. Davidson provided spam messages for 19 companies through himself and several sub-contract spammers, who possessed hundreds of thousands of e-mail addresses.


WINNING TICKET SOLD IN DENVER: Lu Jacks Liquors in Denver sold a winning lottery ticket on Saturday for the most recent drawing, netting the single winner $2.4 million, or $1.2 million in cash. Lu Jacks will receive $5,000 for selling the winning ticket; its numbers were 2, 10, 15, 27, 34, and 39. 


ANTI-UNION MEASURE MAKES BALLOT: The Right to Work Amendment will appear on the November ballot as Amendment 47 after its petitioners gathered over 90,000 valid signatures. If passed, the amendment will give workers the option of joining a union, and will prevent the mandatory payment of union dues as a condition of employment. Colorado would become the 23rd state to pass such an amendment. 


GENOCIDE SURVIVOR TO SPEAK: A survivor of the 1994 Rwandan genocide will speak at the University of Denver this evening as part of the second annual holocaust and genocide awareness week. Joseph Sebarenzi lost his parents, seven siblings, and numerous other relatives in the genocide. He will speak in Lindsey Auditorium at Sturm Hall at 7 p.m.


RECYCLE THOSE WRAPPERS: Clif Bar is launching a program to recycle its energy bar wrappers and turn them into backpacks and other products by fusing the wrappers and weaving them into material. TerraCycle will supervise the recycling efforts, and people can sign up for free at www.terracycle.net/brigades. Those who sign up will receive four collection bags that hold up to 200 wrappers each, and then they can donate the full bags to the charity of their choice.


BUSH’S AFA SPEECH A HOT TICKET: President Bush’s May 28th commencement speec at the Air Force Academy is the hottest ticket in Colorado Springs. The 500 tickets given out Monday by the chamber of commerce were snapped up quickly. The tickets are a small portion of the 20,000 seats available for the graduation ceremony, but no more giveaways are expected. Academy officials say that graduating cadets, along with academy workers, submitted a record request for tickets for family and friends this year.


MORTGAGE CO. FILES FOUND IN TRASH: The Arapahoe County district attorney’s office is warning consumers, after sensitive information from a mortgage company’s files were found in a trash receptacle. The Cove Creek Mortgage Co. files included names, addresses, Social Security numbers and bank and investment account information. The DA’s office says people who used the company should put a fraud alert on their credit reports. The property owner of Cove Creek’s office told authorities Cove Creek’s owner abandoned the office in January and had not been in touch. Prosecutors say that on Saturday, the property manager dumped everything from the office in two trash receptacles.
