Clif Bar unwraps program to collect, recycle waste
East Bay Business Times - by David Goll
Clif Bar & Co. of Berkeley has joined forces with a New Jersey recycler to start the nation's first large-scale program to keep energy bar wrappers out of landfills.
Called the Wrapping Brigade, the program also has a fundraising component, allowing individuals or organizations to donate and/or raise 2 cents per returned wrapper for nonprofit groups. Empty wrappers collected and mailed to TerraCycle Inc. of Trenton, N.J., will be used to make backpacks, gym totes and other products, the first of which will likely be finished by summer.
TerraCycle has already launched similar efforts to collect and reuse empty soda bottles, drink pouches and yogurt containers.
Carly Lutz, Clif Bar's brand manager, said the unique recycling effort fits in with her company's emphasis on creating products that contain 70 percent organic ingredients, reducing its waste output and lowering its carbon dioxide footprint. She said the environmental-minded approach has already led the company to cut out its use of shrink wrap when it ships products to stores.
