  • St. Mark's Lutheran School recycling project -- Mike Scott's Environment

    Friday, August 17, 2007

From worm poop to baby-in-backpack hiking, there are plenty of ways to enjoy and improve the diverse environment all around us.

    Worm waste:

A recycling program at St. Mark's Lutheran School, 4464 Pearl Road, Cleveland, is all about taking plastic out of the waste stream -- and then streaming lique fied worm waste back into the plastic.

    Say what?

St. Mark's students, as part of TerraCycle Inc.'s national pro gram, collected 4,500 used 20-ounce plastic pop bottles last school year, earning more than $250 for the school.

The company then filled each bottle with liquefied waste from earthworms, a product then sold to gardeners for plant food.

"It is very exciting for our students to be a part of protecting the earth," parent volunteer Noelle Muscatello said in a news release.

TerraCycle has 3,800 pop bottle collection locations nationwide and has reused more than 2 million bottles. Go to terracycle.net/bb if you'd like to sign up your school, church or office.

    Get your baby back:

The Geauga Park District is offering a program to help new moms spend time with their babies in the wild-yet-completely-safe outdoors.

The district's Babies in Backpacks program is from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bessie Benner Metzenbaum Park, 7940 Cedar Road, Chester Township.

Mothers should bring their baby in a backpack (or frontpack) carrier for the no-cost hike through beech and maple woods and wildflowers.

The hike will be guided by naturalist (and new mom) Nora Sindelar.

Hikers are reminded not to bring strollers, as the hike is on unpaved trails.
