In Golden at First United Methodist Church, church secretary Sandra Beedle is in charge of an eight-month-old campaign to raise funds for the congregation's homebound and elderly through a program called TerraCycle. www.terracycle.net

"I searched the Web for fundraising ideas and found this," she said.

"We collect plastic soda bottles and pack them in boxes provided by Terracycle. The boxes are sent to Terracycle in Trenton, NJ. They use the bottles for their plant food, which is made from worm poop. It is a natural product in a recycled container," she said as she taped up a box of soda bottles.

"We get 5 cents a bottle with the label on, and 6 cents without labels per bottle and are paid quarterly. One of our members, Beth McKee is a nurse at Lutheran Hospital. She collects bottles at work and brings in bags every two weeks."

"When we first started, people asked, 'What are you going to put in the bottles?' And I said, 'Worm poop!' This is an organic food because it comes from the worm." Having worked as a farmer in the midwest, Beedle said she appreciates any kind of manure and appreciates the organic nature of the product that will fill the recycled soda bottles.

The 519-member congregation has other recycling fundraisers, including recycling toner cartridges in conjunction with www.empties4cash.com.

First United Methodist Church www.goldenfirstumc.org is located at 1500 Ford Street in Golden and Beedle can be reached at 303-279-3484.
