First UMC Raising Funds and Saving Environment
Contributed by: Albert Zakes on 12/6/2006

First United Methodist Church in Golden is collecting old soda bottles to help save the environment and fund their Congregational Care program. For each 20 oz bottle they collect, TerraCycle, Inc. maker of all-natural plant foods, donates 5 cents to the church. TerraCycle™ re-uses the old soda bottles to package its plant food made from liquid worm-poop. The money raised in the campaign is used to help fund the church's Congregational Care program, which provides additional care for the elderly or disabled.

The fundraising campaign lead by Sandra Beedle of First United Methodist is part of a nationwide bottle collection being organized by TerraCycle, called the Bottle Brigade™. The church is one of the top collectors in the Bottle Brigade. Parishioners have saved over 2,000 bottles from becoming trash. That impressive total means that they have raised almost 100 dollars for church programs. Mrs. Beedle said, "The Bottle Brigade is a great opportunity to raise money for the church and help the environment at the same time!"

If you want to get involved and help the church raise money, simply take empty 20 oz soda bottles to the church at 1500 Ford Street in Golden. You can also start your own collection through the Bottle Brigade. Anyone can sign up to earn money for their school, church or any non-profit organization. It's easy to sign up, simply visit: www.terracycle.net/bb/.

TerraCycle is the first company in the country to package its product in used soda bottles! Over 1600 schools, churches, hospitals and community groups have signed on to make money by collecting the used soda pop bottles. To date, the Bottle Brigade has rescued over 1.2 million bottles from ending up in landfills!

To help make recycling more fun and personally rewarding for kids, TerraCycle is now giving neck tags featuring cartoon characters Edgar & Ellen® to the Bottle Brigadiers, so they can fill out the tags with their first name, state and any ideas they have about saving the environment. The neck tags will then be placed on TerraCycle products and sold in Target® Stores. Now, kids can go to Target and see who else is recycling and can be proud to know that their own hard work is not going unnoticed.

TerraCycle Plant Food™ is the first consumer product made and packaged entirely from trash. TerraCycle uses worm poop to make all natural, effective plant foods, and packages them in discarded soda bottles. Whenever possible, the eco-capitalist company uses discarded materials, such as surplus spray heads and misprinted shipping boxes. TerraCycle products are available at leading retailers such as Home Depot®, Wal*Mart® and CVS®; and at hardware stores including ACE Hardware ®, Do it Best® and True Value® and in 2007 will available at Target Stores. In July 2006, an Inc. magazine cover story crowned TerraCycle: "The Coolest Little Startup in America.
