Soda Bottle Brigade Program
With a plan in mind to purchase new garbage cans for Fulda's St. Paul Avenue, Mavis Schipper, owner of D & M Variety, contacted TerraCycle regarding their Soda Bottle Brigade Program.

"What we are doing is collecting 20 ounce soda pop bottles," Schipper stated. "The bottles must be rinsed, labels removed, caps on or off. They need to be the sturdy bottles, and not bent. The bottles can be brought to D & M Variety and we then ship them to TerraCycle."

TerraCycle, a non-profit organization, allows almost any organization to save the bottles and will donate $.06 per bottle to a charity of the organization's choosing.

TerraCycle was begun in 2001 when two Princeton University students, Tom Szaky and Jon Beyer, set out to change the way people do business. A box of worms was their inspiration when these two students formed the idea of creating a company that could be financially successful while still being ecologically and socially responsible. Szaky and Beyer were determined to turn the box of worms into a real-life, commercially viable process.

The result of their dream and experimentation is helping to provide funds to the city of Fulda to purchase the garbage cans needed for St. Paul Avenue.

TerraCycle mass-produces a plant food that is potent, organic, eco-friendly and made from garbage - all the way from the contents to the packaging. The plant food is a liquid plant food(made from worm excrements) which can be sprayed or misted directly onto gardens, lawns, and house plants. It may also be applied in mass agricultural settings.

The bottles that are being collected at D & M Variety and shipped to TerraCycle are filled with the liquid plant food and sold.

To date, $750.00 has been collected from the recycling of the plastic bottles. As the dollar amount grows, so do the thoughts that the bottle recycling could bring about more beautification projects in Fulda.

Questions regarding the TerraCycle 20 ounce bottle recycling project may be addressed to Mavis Schipper at D & M Variety.
