What is upcycling? Upcycling is the process of using waste in its existing form to create new products. Recycling, by contrast, breaks the material down (e.g., a plastic bottle is turned into plastic pellets) so that material can then be reformed into new products. With upcycling, the waste is simply cleaned and shaped, sewn or fused into new products like backpacks, messenger bags, lunch boxes, school supplies, shower curtains, and kites. What is a 'Bag Brigade? A Bag Brigade is a group of people who are committed to collecting used Frito–Lay chip bags to keep them out of landfills. What kind of impact do we expect to have? Our goal is to divert more than 5 million bags from landfills in 2009. We also hope to engage all of Frito–Lay’s 48,000 employees and more than 100,000 consumers in this program to raise awareness of reusing and recycling in local communities across the country. How long will this program last? The current program will run through the end of 2009. What kinds of chip bags are acceptable? Any used Frito-Lay snack bag is acceptable. Any brand, any size! Please keep in mind we donate $0.02 to your designated charity for each acceptable chip bag. Who can apply for the Frito-Lay Bag Brigade? We welcome anyone (18 years or older) to apply to join our upcycling efforts! Because the number of Bag Brigades will initially be limited, Frito-Lay will give priority to moms and college students who are passionate about the environment. What do I need to do to apply for the Frito-Lay Bag Brigade? Applying for the Frito-Lay Bag Brigade program is easy! Designate a Bag Brigade Captain and apply online by clicking here. We currently only have 1,000 available Brigades, so we will notify Captains if they have been awarded one of the open spots. Participating Captains will then administer the program with a Brigade comprised of their own friends, family, co-workers, etc. During the sign-up process, Captains will be asked to select a 501(c)3 charity (must include Tax ID #) to be the recipient of the $0.02 per chip bag reward. Captains must also provide a valid e-mail address to receive a confirmation letter and mailing address to receive program materials. I applied for the program, but I haven’t received a confirmation e-mail. What should I do? Please check to see if your confirmation e-mail from customersupport@terracycle.net was sent to your spam or junk mail, but DO NOT APPLY AGAIN. Please email customersupport@terracycle.net with subject line: “No Confirmation E-mail,” along with your phone number. Someone will contact you and fix the situation. Can my school or organization apply more than once? No. Each individual and organization, including schools, can only apply for one Frito-Lay Brigade account. Additional accounts will be denied or suspended. If you have any questions please contact customersupport@terracycle.net, or call our customer support team at 866–967–6766 for clarification. What if my information changes or needs to be updated? If for any reason you need to change or update your information, please call Brigade Services at 866–967–6766 or email customersupport@terracycle.net, or call our customer support team at 866–967–6766. Do I have to pay for shipping? No! In addition to the collection bags we send to you, we will also provide pre-paid UPS shipping labels. Just place each label on a collection bag or a reused box stuffed with used chip bags and mail it to us. Visit www.ups.com to find a drop off location. Do I need to clean the bags before putting them in the box for shipping? As a courtesy, please remove any leftover crumbs from the bag. Is there a limit to the number of chip bags I can send in? Currently there are no limits but please try to make each shipment as efficient as possible by stuffing the collection bag full of used chip bags. Remember, our goal is to keep more than 5 million chip bags out of landfills! How can I check the number of chip bags our Brigade has collected? TerraCycle will provide regular updates on the number of bags each Brigade has collected on www.terracycle.net. You can also contact Brigade Support Services at customersupport@terracycle.net or via phone at 866–967–6766. I checked my status. Why is it incorrect? Our processing time takes 2-3 weeks and may not reflect every chip bag shipped to-date. Please check back frequently to see your status update. If there is a serious problem with collections or donations status please call Brigade Support Services at 866–967–6766 or e-mail customersupport@terracycle.net. What happens after I receive a confirmation e-mail that I have been awarded one of the 1,000 Bag Brigade spots? TerraCycle will send you collection bags, information on how to run the program and prepaid UPS shipping labels. Please make sure to provide your e-mail address and your mailing address to receive the program materials. How many collection bags will you send to me? After acceptance into the program, we will send you 4 collection bags which can hold 200 chip bags each. For every 2 collection bags we receive from you or your organization, we automatically send you 4 more collection bags. The sooner you return your collection bags stuffed full with chip bags, the faster we can send new collection bags out. How long does to take for me to receive the Brigade shipping materials? Please allow 3-4 weeks to receive your shipping materials. At this time, we are currently configuring our database; the estimated arrival time can take up to 5 weeks. We are asking all participants, especially new sign-ups to bear with us while we are revamping our system. Can I get more than 4 collection bags? Due to the large number of participants in the program, we are unable to handle special collection bag requests. Please be aware of the 3-4 week processing time and plan accordingly at your location. Please do not apply multiple times to receive more collection bags, as stated earlier. Multiple signups for a single location will be suspended. HOWEVER, if you have a large number of chip bags (we’re talking 600-1,000) you can ship them in a recycled box, roughly the size of a carry-on bag or microwave. Simply email customersupport@terracycle.net with your name and full address requesting an electronic label, or call our customer support team at 866–967–6766. Use the pre-paid label and ship it via UPS, as you normally would with the collection bags. Please note: This request is ONLY for a high volume of chip bags. What if I never received my shipping materials? If you have not received shipping materials within 4 weeks of initial sign up, please call Brigade Support Services at 866–967–6766 or e-mail customersupport@terracycle.net. We may need to verify your shipping information for tracking purposes. Our organization is done collecting chip bags, can we unsubscribe? To unsubscribe, return all collection bags and any extra UPS shipping labels to TerraCycle and contact customersupport@terracycle.net to unsubscribe your account. I've sent collections in. Why didn’t I receive a check? Charity checks are mailed DIRECTLY to the charity, not to the individual or collecting location. Charities will receive a check in June for collections received in between November-April. Charities will receive a check in December for collections received between May-October. I forgot to select a charity during sign up. Can I still select one? Yes. Please call 866–967–6766 or email customersupport@terracycle.net with the charity name, address, contact person and Tax ID #.
